I got three from raintree at the last flower show. Two did well. The third, my dog dug up, and it died out and looked dead, dead, dead. Dry and brown. But I teased it out and stuck it back in the ground; the area still gets water during the summer. And it looks like it's decided to live. Proud of my plucky lingonberry, even (especially) if it grows sideways with leaves tinged pink.

dianthus bit it, too
It, like the lithodora, has been here for two or three years now and been evergreen. I guess I cut them back to the ground now?....
my lithodora! noooooooooooooo!
What is it?

Doing my long overdue fall cleanup / post-freeze assessment. This guy is back. I have it in two places.
Sad thing is that I'm not sure it's not something I planted on purpose. It kind of looks like strawberry, and I thought about seeing if strawberry would grow here.
But maybe it's blackberry. Or poison ivy. I have no idea! The stems were clumped, it had shallow roots (maybe an inch long?), the stems were rough but not exactly spiky, and I've pulled it out at last twice this year under my new "if I didn't plant it it is probably a weed that will take over if I don't rip it out" policy. (That policy replaces my "if it's green it's pretty" policy, which didn't work out.)
What is it??
(I'm looking at the three-leaved thing. The heart-shaped leaves are the vancouveria that I'm cutting back everywhere - it's done for the year!)

Finally got rid of the oceanspray. Listed it on Freecycle and several people wanted it. Wrong plant for that space where I get so much sun -- way too shaggy for a narrow bed, even if it will grow tall enough to eventually screen the neighbor's yard from the bedroom. I like it when the blooms are white, but once they turn gray ... no thanks, I want that sunny spot for something that can give me vegetables. Hope that it's as easy to give away the euonymous up front when we get to that.
Speaking of, the lady that took the oceanspray said it's not a euonymous, but some kind of laurel. Crap. I don't think it's a laurel, but I don't really know WHO to believe.

September 9 2013

Toad Lilies are in bloom and look nice in person. I'd like to add one more.

Today's veggie haul!

purple beans!

Green beans - they didn't grow as well as last year's beans, or my purple beans..

So many tomatoes!

Fuschia finally in bloom

Bees LOVE the sunflowers

Sunflowers and dahlias

These dahlias have been pretty, but should have been staked

The biggest sunflower is probably 10-12 feet tall

The nasturtiums love the edge of this bed

Cascade Hops plus a bean thinking about making it

aster Wood 's Pink
From molbak's, five. The soil was concrete - dug it out and mixed with show remaining new topsoil still by the new shed. Added veggie fertilizer. Something should grow here!

July
Went out of town for a few days. Came back to find...
Small tomatoes are ripening quickly and doing well. Big tomatoes are growing fast and doing fine. Basil in the ground is thriving, oregano in the ground bolted, thyme is struggling, basil in planters struggles, nothing will grow in the dog-packed area by the bird bath on the west side, and the dog or some critter has ripped up some plants by the roots. Two sunflowers are doing well. Some beans survived the initial slug attacks and look like they will grow fine. The mum that lives is huge now. Bigroot geraniums are happy and thriving where little else does under big rhodie. Hardy geraniums Patricia are starting to get ratty foliage, but isn't bad yet. Red flowing currant is getting crispy. Blueberries are ripening quickly, except sunshine blue. Lingonberries are flowering. Cosmo seeds I planted are a whole two inches tall, where they sprouted at all.
Only real bummers are several dead whole plants in the ground lose where an animal dug them. Things are shaggy and overwritten in spots, but it's still not too bad.

snapdragon
I moved it from the deck planter to the ground. Looks bad now that it's grown. Broke this one off, though - oops
tomatoes
Despite regular (I thought) watering, the tomatoes in the self watering planter are doing much better than the others.
