January 17, 2014

Two big branches fell down in the windstorm last weekend. I watched the trees in the wind and wondered how they didn't just snap ... and then they did. My bedroom now has a lovely view straight through to the streetlights through the backyard and past the neighbor's backyard.

I cut them up with a chainsaw. That was actually kind of fun.

Spring is definitely coming.

Hellebores are getting started.

Even the tiny ones the dog tore up and the tree branches landed on is putting out pretty buds.

Daffodils are already getting started along the west fence and the back path.

The tulips I put in for last year are coming back, too. I didn't expect that - they're fancy tulips that I thought usually were one-and-done. But they're definitely putting up some tiny green shoots, both around the back patio and along the east fence.

Not sure what the fungus / spore-spreading-looking-thing is next to the tulips I'm surprised to see back

Daylilies are coming back already, too. The one in the middle seems to be missing, though.

Spirea is also budding (green, not flowers yet) and the potentilla have tiny leaf buds too,

We had freezing weather for a few weeks, and then a week or two in the upper 40s / lower 50s. Crocus are coming up too. Guess I really, really planted that front bed too late.  Oh well. Something got into it and dug out some of the bulbs, anyway.

There's a big vine of ivy coming from under the back corner neighbor's fence, under the pieris, and toward the back patio. I did not invite this guy to the party.
